Purpose
To help protect trees that have historical significance or unique qualities, the Tree Board has the ability to officially recognize them as “Landmark Trees.”
According to the Land Development Ordinance, “The Town of Rolesville Tree Board shall locate, select, and identify any trees which qualify as 'Landmark Trees.’” A tree can earn this designation if it meets certain criteria, such as being a rare species, exceptionally old, linked to a historic person or event, having a unique shape or appearance, or simply adding scenic value to the area.
Once a tree is designated as a Landmark Tree, specific protections apply, especially if it's part of a developer’s tree protection plan. These protections include avoiding grading or installing utilities within the tree’s drip line, placing protective barriers around the tree, and following other landscaping standards outlined in Section 6.2.4 of the ordinance.
