The purpose of this project is to improve walkability between Rolesville High School and downtown Rolesville.
This project involves the construction of pedestrian facilities along East Young Street from Virginia Water Drive to Century Farm Road. This project will connect with existing sidewalk on the west side of East Young Street at Virginia Water Drive, then cross the US 401 bypass. After crossing the US 401 bypass, consistent with the greenway plan, a multi-use path will be installed along the east side of East Young Street up to Quarry Road.
The project has been segmented into a few smaller phases:
- Phase A - sidewalk from Virginia Water Drive to the US 401 Bypass (this section was completed in late 2019)
- Phase B - signalized crosswalks in the intersection of US 401 Bypass and E Young Street and multi-use path to Century Farm Road
The project is funded by NC DOT and local funds.
Updates
US 401 Bypass Pedestrian Crossing
This project is substantially completed, as only minor work items remain. With the improvements installed at this intersection, pedestrians now have a safe method of travel to cross the bypass.
US 401 Pedestrian Improvement Work Begins
This portion of the project will install pedestrian improvements for the US 401 Bypass and a multi-use path along E Young Street from US 401 to Century Farm Road.
Roadwork is taking place in this area through mid-November. Expect intermittent lane closures between 9am and 4pm. The contractor is aware of afternoon traffic from the high school and will plan work accordingly whenever possible.
E Young St Sidewalk Spring 2021 Update
The sidewalk from Virginia Water Drive to the bypass is now complete. Project plans for the US 401 bypass pedestrian crossing and multi-use path to Century Farm Road are under review by the NC DOT.
Bidding on the project is expected this spring, with construction anticipated over the summer of 2021. While the hope is to complete the project prior to school restarting in August, some lingering work is likely. Every effort will be made to ensure that impacts to traffic in the area are minimized once school begins.
E Young St Sidewalk - August Update
The contractor has been selected for Phase A, and preliminary work has begun on site. Installation of storm drainage utilities and sidewalk is expected to be completed in early October.
